Wabi-Sabi

On a recent trip to LA I came across a beautiful little book. It’s the kind of book you can open to any page, read a sentence, a paragraph or read all 94 pages in an afternoon.  My favorite aspect is there’s no real beginning or end. So, for attention deficit readers like myself, it makes for the perfect bedside/train ride companion. I purchased it at one of my favorite new shops in West Hollywood.

This book, Wabi Sabi by Leonard Koren, gave me a glimpse into the cultural significance of Wabi Sabi in Japanese culture and the world we live in.  It stresses the importance of a very particular type of irregular beauty occurring in natural processes and appreciating the cosmic order in how we live.

Some notes to keep close on wabi sabi-

* Everything either devolves toward or evolves from nothingness.

* Greatness exists in the inconspicuous and overlooked details and irregularities.

* Acceptance of the inevitable.

* Irregular, intimate, unpretentious, earthy, murky and simple.
